Grow and Eat Local & Organic
“If you feed a man a meal, you only feed him for a day , but if you teach a man to grow food, you feed him for a lifetime.”
- Thich Nhat Hanh
Lin Steedman and Oliver Egan are owners and operators of Edible Acres. Growing organic produce to feed our community gives us great joy. We are a market garden farm and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, located right at Winderberry in Windermere. CSA is model of farming which supports local growers, local economy and is a more sustainable alternative for growing and distributing food. Edible Acres is the first farm using the CSA model in the Columbia Valley and the only organic producer selling at the Invermere Farmer’s Market.
Our vision for this CSA is based on our values:
- We show respect for the land by maintaining and improving the land and surrounding ecosystem
- We are responsible land stewards, using only organic practices; no chemical sprays or fertilizers
- We are energy conscious, minimizing the use of machinery and creating a local distribution network
- We maintain decent working conditions for farmers, by providing a reasonable income, and we emphasize the therapeutic value of agricultural work, by creating social and economic opportunities.
How the CSA works:
CSA members sign up for the service, and pays for it in advance, early in the season. Once food is ready to harvest, members receive a weekly box of local organic produce grown at Edible Acres. The CSA member enters the risk of farming with the farmer, so if it is a tough growing season for tomatoes, you may not get many; you might get lots of peas instead.
We also provide a working share option in the CSA. Those who want this option must commit four hours per week of work on the farm, in exchange for receiving a weekly box of produce, knowledge gained around sustainable agriculture and a community-based experience.
Much of our focus at Edible Acres is based on the belief that soil health and quality are essential in producing healthy, organic produce for our customers. We use compost, green manures, animal manure, organic fertilizers, cover crops and crop rotations to increase and maintain our soil health.
We are not certified organic (a multi-year process), but we use only organic methods of growing and don’t use any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. We welcome all members of the community to come out to our farm, ask us questions and see where and how we produce local, organic food.
Lin Steedman graduated with her Bachelors of Science in Global Resource Systems from the University of British Columbia, with much of her focus on sustainable agriculture and food security. Lin left UBC with passion and drive to bring local and organic produce to her home community of Windermere.
Oliver Egan completed a certificate in recreation leadership as well as three years of economics. Oliver’s work experience has contributed to his knowledge in the field of horticulture. He brings energy and an appetite for good food to Edible Acres. He has learned alongside Lin about the detrimental effects of corporate and conventional farming and how the majority of our society has devalued food and what it means to our health, happiness and community well being.
